Rest week and transition training preparation…

Its rest week at last! we have 7 solid weeks of training behind us now, and now its time to rest and practice the triathlon specific aspects of racing. Today we did transition training, and we aimed the practice specifically at the transition of our first race at Clanwilliam in two weeks time. The start of the bike leg at Clanwilliam is on a hill, so there is no use starting the bike barefoot and having your shoes connected to your bike. Its better to put your shoes on in transition so that you can clip in immediately and have the help of push and pulling on the pedals up the monster first hill. You must also remember to leave your bike in a very easy gear too. We did practice taking our feet out of the pedals towards the end of the cycle, as then you can run barefoot into transition after the cycle, and leave your shoes connected to your bike. This ALWAYS saves time, and you should be doing this for every triathlon race.

Another useful tip is to leave your goggles and swim cap on your head while running to T1. This means that you have 2 free hands to work your wetsuit off. As you run into transition you can remove your cap and goggles and throw them in your transition box. Remember to put your wetsuit in the box too. Elastic laces are a must, and every triathlete should have elastic laces in their shoes.
