Body strength session for the athletes…

It was cold, it was dark, it was windy, it was miserable. But saying that, we had  a great turn out for the boot camp style strength session. Both the Gun Run running group and the 70.3 Half Ironman triathletes join for this strength session. Core strength and upper and lower body strength is imperative not only for performance in sport but also for injury prevention at this early stage of training. For the triathletes, we do this strength training once a week for the first 8 weeks of our training. The Gun Run group will have the session throughout their training. The athletes that don’t make this session are advised to get into the gym and do the super circuit twice (definitely not as much fun as boot camp!).

The exercises that we do at boot camp are an array of lunges, explosive jumps, crunches, push ups, dips, plank, one leg hops, burpees, etc. Most of these exercises are done in-between low intensity running. It is after all a half ironman triathlon we are training for, so the low intensity running is far more beneficial for us at this stage.

The most exciting thing about these early morning sessions is that each week we notice the darkness creeping away a little earlier each session. We are looking very forward to training in the light and the warmth of spring!

Training tomorrow: Half Ironman group: experienced swimmers have their open water swim and then on Sunday the whole group has their first brick session. Its a ride/run brick. Look out for us heading towards Simons Town.

The Gun Run group will be doing their long group run from the Point Virgin Active.
