Beginner triathletes prepare for 1st race…

After 12 weeks of training so far, the beginner Embark triathlete group prepares for thier first race. Its a Duathlon. A duathlon is a run/bike/run, a format of multisport that excludes the swim. Its a great way to do a multi disipline event if you are scared of the water! The Duathlon this weekend is on the Killarney race track! Its a treat to be able to race on a closed circuit, free of cars.

We have been learning all the ins and outs of triathlon, and as from 2 weeks ago the beginners are slowly moving into the open water and gaining experience there. We are running track too, to improve mechanics and increase speed, and its a welcome break from killer hills that we have been running. The biking is up to about 1h30 currently, and most weekends we are doing brick sessions, bike/run in preparation for Sunday’s race.

Our first triathlon is end of May and then the beginners will be ready to step up to the half ironman training that begins on 1 Aug 2013. (the level expected here is about 800m of swimming, 40kms of biking and 8kms of running, not all back to back though! 🙂

Good luck to the beginners this weekend!
